Manufacturing and engineering

Four or five standards running at once, energy as a controllable cost, and customer ESG questionnaires arriving with the audit pack.

Manufacturing is where most UK certification work happens, and where the standards intersect most often. A single site may hold ISO 9001 for customer confidence, ISO 14001 because a tender requires environmental management, ISO 45001 for health and safety and ISO 50001 because energy is one of the largest controllable costs. Holding four certificates is normal; running four separate management systems is not.

The technical content differs by process. Metalworking brings coolant, swarf, solvent and effluent. Plastics bring polymer waste and volatile emissions. Electronics bring substance restrictions and conflict-minerals questions from customers. Coatings bring solvent management and permit conditions. In every case the auditor will want the aspect register, legal register, monitoring data and evidence that objectives were genuinely reviewed, not a policy document.

Energy is usually the fastest return. Sub-metering compressed air, chillers and the largest motors typically reveals ten to twenty per cent of consumption that nobody is managing, and ISO 50001 turns those findings into a baseline and a repeatable improvement cycle.

Customers increasingly attach ESG questions to the same supplier audits: Scope 1 and 2 emissions per site, renewable tariff evidence, recycled content and a carbon reduction plan. Building those numbers inside the ISO 14001 process prevents the published report and the audit pack drifting apart.

Typical UK timelines: four to six months for a first certificate at a single site with an existing quality system, and a further two to three months when adding standards to an integrated system.
